Deeper Voice of Textiles is a community based project offering men of the Hunter Region with a new means of creative expression through fibre art.
Conceived and curated by Anne Kempton - textile artist, gallery owner and curator of Timeless Textiles, the project is a vehicle for Newcastle businesses to work collaboratively in a uniquely creative way. During the autumn of 2017 twenty local businesses, primarily employing men, joined the project and worked alongside Tim Johnson, a highly regarded UK-based artist and basketmaker and local artist and stone carver Graham Wilson.
Creating art works using the skills and tools of their trade combined with materials, techniques and ideas from fibre art, the men have created a challenging body of work exploring the traditions and history of textiles from their own unique perspective.
Of the project, Tim Johnson says 'it's been a great honour to work with these talented men of Newcastle. Many of us do not allow ourselves to have the time or opportunity to do something playfully creative without apparent functional outcome, this is what Deeper Voice of Textiles is all about and we hope all our participants have benefited from our 'invitation to create'.
