This one day workshop is about exploring Bangalow Palm (sheathing base, inflorescence and spathe) and learning its characteristics. It is a versatile material but it is important to understand its strengths and weaknesses. You will learn to work with forms of embellishment on the fibre. How to work within the constraints of the material without feeling constrained? How to make your mark? Developing a creative partnership with the material.
Students will experience a range of techniques for embellishment of the fibre and utilise some of these processes to create a sculptural piece.
Students will also be shown techniques of working with the Bangalow sheathing base to make a simple basket. They would then have hands-on experience to make their own.
Included in the workshop will be explanations about gathering, preparing and care for the plant material. There will be demonstrations, finished samples to examine, and a presentation of images of Bangalow creations from a number of practitioners.
A comprehensive handout, about ‘tips and traps’ when working with Bangalow, will be provided.
